Constructive Dialogue on Antwerp Diamond Industry's Future at Davos

Davos

On January, 21, 2025 AWDC joined global leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos to discuss the future of the Antwerp diamond industry. Our CEO, Karen Rentmeesters, and Vice President, Ravi Bhansali, took part in a panel at Belgium House alongside Belgian Minister Annelies Verlinden, Head of Belgian Customs Kristian Vanderwaeren, and De Beers CEO Al Cook.

The discussion fostered a constructive dialogue on the challenges facing Europe’s diamond trade and how to create a more supportive business environment. Minister Verlinden emphasized Antwerp’s key role as a global diamond hub and the government’s responsibility to enable entrepreneurship. “We need stability, clear regulations, and less administrative complexity,” she said. We highlighted the importance of close cooperation between the industry and policymakers to ensure Antwerp remains competitive on the global stage.

Ravi Bhansali reinforced the significance of Antwerp’s position: “The diamond trade will continue, here or elsewhere. It’s up to our governments to ensure Antwerp remains a vital part of that story.” Al Cook highlighted that Belgium’s strict regulations can be an advantage if they allow the sector to thrive, but unnecessary barriers could push trade elsewhere.

Despite the challenges, the discussion was constructive, and we welcome the positive signals from policymakers. We are committed to translating these insights into action, ensuring that Antwerp remains the world’s most trusted diamond trading center.
