Antwerp diamond sector steps up efforts in combatting conflict diamonds
The Antwerp diamond industry, represented by the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC), is stepping up its efforts in combatting conflict diamonds. The city, largely owing its reputation as the most transparent and strictly controlled diamond trade centre to the rigorous controls of all diamond imports and exports at the Antwerp Diamond Office, is determined to continue its strong commitment towards the Kimberley Process. According to the AWDC, the increased vigilance and intensified controls have already resulted in the detection by the Diamond Office experts of a shipment likely containing conflict diamonds from the Central African Republic (CAR).

On 27 May, the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC), kicked-off its US networking tour, with stops in Miami, Los Angeles and culminating at the JCK fair in Las Vegas. The tour proved successful in facilitating access for Antwerp companies to numerous US jewelers and retailers, helping to build closer relationships and leading to new business opportunities.
Following last year’s successful networking event in Shanghai, AWDC is once again organizing two networking events. An Antwerp Diamond networking event with a delegation of top Chinese jewellers and an Antwerp Diamond Night, a VIP event in an exclusive location in Shanghai. Both events will take place on 14 October in the framework of the Mission to Shanghai, organized by the City of Antwerp, from 12 until 15 October.

This year, Sporting A is once again bringing temporary sports arenas to various squares in the city. Residents of Antwerp will have the opportunity to be introduced to various sports and physical activities in four locations. Local residents were closely involved in the setting up of the area, where also activities other than sport scan be organized. The sports arenas are partially sponsored by the Antwerp diamond sector.
