Rio Tinto’s first rough diamond tender for 2014 has delivered a strong result amidst unprecedented participation and a record number of successful bidders. The tender comprised 124 lots of rough diamonds, a unique combination of white and fancy coloured diamonds from its Argyle (Australian), Diavik (Canadian) and Murowa (Zimbabwean) mines, awarded to 44 companies.

The ‘Beurs voor Diamanthandel’ (The Bourse for Diamond Trade), in cooperation with the other Antwerp bourses, is organizing the fourth edition of the Antwerp Meets Antwerp, the Antwerp Diamond Manufacturers and Traders Fair on Tuesday, 29 April 2014. ‘Ambacht in de kijker’ is a yearly national competition that seeks to promote the crafts sector vis-a-vis the general public. Among twelve selected finalists is Antwerp master polisher Pieter Bombeke. The general public can also vote for their favorite. Monday March 31st, in the presence of Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC) and the Shanghai Diamond Exchange (SDE) signed a Cooperation Agreement, outlining their cooperation with respect to the development of an exclusive commercial and trade relationship. The signing of such an agreement, in the framework of President Xi Jinping’s first visit to Europe as Head of State, marks the key importance of the diamond trade between Antwerp and China.

On 5 May, in the run-up to the 2014 federal elections, AWDC, in cooperation with UNIZO, is organizing a Diamond Election Debate. The debate, covering a wide variety of relevant issues and diamond related topics, will be followed by a networking reception and takes place in the Beurs voor diamanthandel at 4PM.

On Tuesday, 1 April, the Antwerp diamond sector welcomed President Ernest Bai Koroma. The presidential delegation’s visit highlights the importance of the trade relations between Sierra Leone and the Antwerp diamond industry. An important part of Sierra Leone’s diamond production is in fact traded in Antwerp.

In the framework of the EU-Africa summit taking place in Brussels, a delegation of various Zimbabwean trade organisations visited the Antwerp diamond sector Wednesday April 2. The delegates had the opportunity to get a unique behind-the-scenes tour of the Diamond Office and the Antwerp Diamond Tender Facility, allowing them to acquire a better insight into various aspects of the Antwerp and global diamond industry.
